How do I sign up for the Marching Band?
Signing up is easy! See one of the Marching Band directors to express interest in joining the class. You can also reach out to us via email:
What is the time commitment required to be in the Marching Band?
Marching Band rehearses every Thursday after school from 3:30-5:30pm. Typically, we perform at 3 to 4 weekend football games in the fall which are individually scheduled, but the average time commitment is about 4 hours. We march in 1 to 2 parades each academic year, which again typically falls on a weekend.
How much does it cost to be in the Marching Band?
There is no cost to join the Marching Band. Uniform dry cleaning is a requirement and the cost to dry clean your uniform can vary from $20-$40 (approximately) Uniforms MUST be returned cleaned and in the dry cleaning wrap when you are done with it or needing a new size.
What’s this I hear about gym credit for joining? Does this mean I can’t take a gym class at Madison?
Active participation in the Marching Band earns you a Physical Education credit. Some students may opt to remain in a P.E. class and opt for community service credit for Marching Band. Speak to the Marching Band Director if you are interested in joining and have a particular question about class credit versus community service.
Can I take another band/performing arts class at Madison in addition to Marching Band?
Absolutely! We HIGHLY encourage you to enroll in a curricular performing arts class during your time at Madison! Currently, Marching Band members are also represented in the concert band, piano, guitar, choir, orchestra, and theater programs here at Madison.
Can I participate in other non-music activities and/or work a job while in the Marching Band?
YES! We have several members who are also involved in other activities. If you are in a Fall or Spring sport, you can opt to participate for one semester rather than all year. Rehearsals are once a week for 2.5 hours. There is a requirement to be at all rehearsals and performances. Performances are TBD each semester. Some occur during the school day and others are outside of school hours, on weekends. Participation is required to earn your Physical Education credit.
I’m still not sure if marching band is for me… is there any way to try this out before signing up?
ABSOLUTELY! Come sit in on a rehearsal. Better yet, come to band camp over the summer! We’ll teach you to march, introduce you to some friendly faces so you won’t feel alone at the start of the school year, and do our best to convince you that the Marching Band is the place for you! We would love to have you.
What if I don’t play an instrument? Can I still become a member of the Marching Band?
Great question! Yes, you can absolutely become a member of the Marching Band - we always have roles available. Typically, students without prior instrumental experience choose to join as members of the color guard. Please reach out to one of the directors for more information and we can discuss what option is the best fit for you.
